Visit to Knightsbridge to present Gathering scroll to Mrs. Mona Ennis ( neé Englishby)

Mrs. Mona Ennis ( neé Englishby)

On the afternoon of Sunday November 10th a few committee members from the Gathering  and pupils from Dunsany N.S. took a trip to Knightsbridge  Nursing Home to visit Mrs. Mona Ennis (neé Englishby).  Mrs. Ennis was  a past pupil of Dunsany N.S. from many years ago  and  was unable to attend our Gathering event on September 21st.    Her family contacted us  to arrange a meeting to present her with her scroll.  Mrs. Ennis was in great spirits on the day and was delighted with her scroll, she could tell us of many memories from her childhood school days.  She also gave a great account of all the neighbours she had when she lived on the Old Road in Dunsany.  Her family were most pleasant and had a great welcome for us on the day.  Mrs. Ennis’s son & grandson  travelled from Scotland and her daughters from Kildare and Wexford.  Mrs. Ennis really enjoyed the chat with us, and us with her.  There  will be a big birthday to  celebrate in January as she will reach  her 90th birthday.  We wish her and her family all the best wishes for the future and thank them and The Knightsbridge Nursing Home for their hospitality on the day.

What a win for Dunsany, the 20 year wait was worth it…..

Today was a great day of celebration for  all involved with Dunsany N.S.  The venue was  Páirc Tailteann, Navan, at 10.30am for the Cumann na mBunscol final against Scoil Naoimh Pio, Knockcommon.  This 20 minute aside game was full of energy and team playing on behalf of all the pupils involved.  There was plenty of sharing and passing along with goals, points, and saves that eventually led to  a score of 5   14   to  3   5  with a  well deserved win for Dunsany.  We are so proud of all the boys and girls who participated in this game and also to all the people who came out in great numbers to support the school with flags and banners and good wishes.  We would like to thank Mr Donnelly, James Farrell and Jimmy Maguire on a great result and for all the effort and time they have given to the boys and girls in training and going to matches.  Congratulations and well done to all the boys and girls involved. (Check out the Hogan Stand website for a great report on the final.)

Strictly Come Dancing

530-strictly-come-dancing

Well done to Mrs.Yvonne Behan and Mr. Tommy Brennan on taking part in Dunsany Kilmessan Strictly Come Dancing in aid of Dunsany Kilmessan GFC, on Sunday November 17th.  They did a beautiful waltz in which Tommy serenaded Yvonne.  They were magical and did us proud.  We were delighted to see so many people turn out for this event.  We would like to thank all who sponsored Yvonne from school.  Congratulations to the winners Arlene Flynn and Michelle Horan who danced the charleston and did so very well.  A great night was had by all.

Halloween 2013

In the Junior room: Last minute Halloween preparations have been going on.  Popcorn and Maltesers hands were made and on Thursday 24 October, they had a visit to the library.  They visited as part of Meath Library Month.  Apparently the author they met had pink hair (surely that can’t be true?!)

In the middle room:  They have been gearing up for Halloween with lots of spooky poetry and ghoulish art.  They’re also writing their own stories: check out Luke Byrne-Kelly’s (2nd class) super scary piece below

    The Haunted House

It was dark, it was night.  There was a grave-yard at the top of a hill and a house beside it.  People thought it was haunted. They got over it.  But it really was haunted.  A man went over to the grave-yard on October31st, Halloween.  The town heard screams.  There were loads of stories.  But this is what really happened: A zombie awoke and dragged him in the house.  The man came across creepers, it was horrible. There were guts as well, cob-web with black widow spider, a dead man was on the wall.  There was a coffin.  The zombie put him in.  Nobody goes it the grave-yard anymore.  It was in the paper.  He lit him on fire.

In the Senior room:  We have been putting the finishing touches to our Bronze Age projects and Science experiments.  Science notes have been distributed to all the pupils and Bronze Age projects from each class will be on display in the corridor if you would like to have a look at them.  It has been a busy week!

Mad Scientists & Monsters

On Friday 25 October a day was enjoyed, as the children dressed as monsters and mad scientists, as they demonstrated their experiments.  Everybody had a great day.

Dunsany N.S. Gathering 2013 Update & Photos

gathering logo

We are delighted that our recent Gathering passed off well.  We thank you all for attending in such numbers and ensuring the pupils presented for duty in the choir that evening.  We are very pleased with the lovely choir they provided during Mass and it was said many times that “the Infants stole the show!”  They all looked so smart in their uniforms too. A lovely evening was had by all. We all agree that it’s lovely to see the school building buzzing with people. We would like to thank all those who sent lovely kind letters and mails to say how much you all enjoyed this event.

Grateful thanks to all who made this evening possible.

Here are some photos from that beautiful sunny evening on September 21st 2013

OLYMPIANS VISIT

An ordinary school morning took an exciting twist recently when Irish Olympians Natyalya Coyle (Modern Penthalon) and Darren O’ Neill (Boxing) paid the school a suprise visit.  After the initial flurry of excitement, Natalya and Darren were welcomed by pupils and staff with a standing ovation.  They went on to spend an hour fielding all sorts of interesting questions on their sporting careers.  Olympic 2012, training, drug testing, nutrition and competitiveness were amongst the topics discussed.  The pupils learned that Darren who captained the Irish team in London last summer, rooms with John Joe Nevin on every occasion they compete together.  They also learned that Natalya can eat as much as she likes as often as she likes as five disciplines require lots of food, Darren on the other hand has to “eat lettuce” to make the weight for a match! Darren is no stranger to the classroom as he is a primary school teacher.  Natalya brought with her the Olympic torch which she carried for her 300 metre run.  In total 8,000 people carried the torch. All 8,000 of them are represented on the torch by 8,000 holes.  Would you believe that the food hall in the Olympic Village was as long as four football pitches and as wide as one – it had food from every country in the world and even had a McDonalds!  Natalya and Darren were very generous with their time.  Despite having a Sports Council event to attend to later that morning, they signed autographs and posed for photos with pupils.  They are wonderful ambassadors for their individual sport and for their country.  The school is very grateful to the McQuaid family, Dunsany who made this visit possible and to these fine young athletes for their time and inspirational talk.
